A few of the most famous courses nearby are Palmares, Boavista, Parque da Floresta and Penina. Penina has often hosted the Portuguese Open, now known as the Algarve Open.

The western Algarve boasts some of Europe’s greatest surfing with big winter swells and great waves for the beginner, advanced and expert surfers. Some of the surf spots are Zavial, Tonel, Mareta and Beliche, Arrifana, Carrapateira and Praia Do Amato.
